My Favourite Fair Isle

Craig shows us his top 10 Fair Isle jumpers for autumn and winter 2017

Named after an incredibly small Island off the coast of Scotland, Fair Isle is the general term for intricately patterned knitwear. I won’t bore you with the details of the techniques involved in producing this particular style of knitwear, but I will show you my top ten favourite sweaters that fall into the Fair Isle category.

Fair Isle sweaters really are a great option for the cooler whether, wear one with a tweed jacket over an oxford button down shirt and a bow tie or dress it right down with your favourite old jeans and some comfy socks.  Gift wise, you can’t go wrong. They’ve stood the test of time and suit a range of ages since they’ve seen significant resurgence in the past couple of years, so it’s a safe bet.

I’ve done my best to choose you a range of sweaters to suit a range of budgets and tastes.

My Top Ten

First up is this Nordic style sweater by Lands’ End Beige fairisle sweater at Debenhams – Was £110 Now £53.62. This is a more casual swear and will look great with jeans and boots.

Second on my list is this rich coloured offering by Boden. Available in sizes small up to XXL it’s £70

Next we have the most expensive offering from Ralph Lauren, priced at £430 and available online.

Fourth is this more traditional style Fair Isle sweater from Joseph Turner. I’m a fan of the bright colours here and while the price if down from £99 to £79 you should get it while you can.

If you’re more comfortable with a lot less pattern, this sweater from Fat Face may be for you. Mostly cream wool, the Fair Isle is kept to the upper chest and shoulders. Yours for £48

Another sweater with less pattern is this one from Hammond & Co at Debenhams. So, if cream isn’t for you, maybe navy is? Down to £43 it’s a bargain and it’s on my wish list! What’s more it’s also available in big and tall sizes.

Next up we have another brightly patterned offering. From Fat Face, this is £48 and available in XS to XXXL

If you prefer a sleeveless sweater this one from Hammond & Co at Debenhams is a solid option. It’ll look great under a coat or jacket and with a shirt and tie. Down to just £40 it’s rich in lambswool and available in big and tall sizes.

If you like a collar on your sweater, this one from Brooks Brothers is a great option. At £115 the colours are great and it’s a good option for dressing up with a tie and blazer or down with jeans.

And last but not least is this stunning sweater from J. Crew. This lambswool crew neck fair Isle sweater is £100 and it’s firmly at the top of my Christmas list. Fingers crossed I’ve been good this year!

So those are my top ten favourite fair Isle sweaters for this season. What do you think? Are you a Fair Isle fan? Are you new to it and considering your first purchase or are you looking for a gift for someone? Either way, please leave me a comment below to let me know your thoughts.
